Do you enjoy taking photos and are you curious about the environment and concerned about climate change? Then, you may have what it takes to win one of our annual photo competitions!
Our photo competitions in a nutshell
Every year, the EEA organises a photo competition that attracts thousands of people who capture their take and stories through the camera lens in their own unique and creative way. It is one of our main outreach activities, which enables people to become active participants in raising awareness and in helping to shed light on pressing environmental issues and the necessity to preserve nature.
Participation is free of charge. Participants are invited to send their best photos via a specific form and compete to win a cash prize. The photos collected through the competitions are used in our products, on our website and in other communication channels.
Note that all participants have to be at least 18 years old and citizens of one of the 32 EEA member countries or six cooperating countries, including the 27 EU Member States, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, Türkiye, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia.
Previous competitions' winning entries
ZeroWaste PIX (2023)
The "ZeroWaste PIX" photo competition raised awareness on our production systems and consumption patterns that are vital aspects of our economy and livelihoods. As consumers, we enjoy numerous conveniences and benefits to our quality of life due to industrial production. However, we know this comes at a huge cost to our environment and increasingly to our own health and well-being. Our production and consumption systems have led to increased pollution and relentless resource extraction, degrading our nature and causing biodiversity loss.

REDISCOVER Nature (2020)
Isn’t nature full of wonders? No matter where we are, we can always appreciate its beauty. Have you ever sat near a quiet lake in a mountain, watched sparrows nesting in your garden or a tiny herb seedling grow on your kitchen windowsill? Taking in nature in all its beautiful shapes and forms can bring us a lot of joy – now possibly more than ever. We invited Europeans to reconnect with nature and capture all its wonders on camera under the 'Rediscover Nature' competition.

Sustainably Yours (2019)
Many goods and services contributing to our quality of life and well-being exert pressure on the environment and global climate. The way we consume and produce (and discard) these goods and services releases pollutants, damage natural habitats and contributes to climate change — all of which in turn harms our health and life on Earth. In fact, supported by over-arching European Union policies, many authorities and organisations across Europe are already taking action to reduce negative impacts. To highlight the importance of living sustainably, we organised the photography competition 'Sustainably Yours'.

Environment & Me (2014)
In a small village in the countryside or a densely populated city, wherever we live, the environment is around us. It is the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, the furniture, clothes and gadgets we use, the energy we consume, the strolls we take in the woods… We are connected with and dependent on the environment. We invited citizens to share what the environment means to them under the 'Environment & Me' photo competition.

Waste•smART (2013)
Imagine all the resources, energy and labour that are used to produce food, cars, clothes, mobile phones and everything we consume. If we do not re-use and recycle them, they could be ending up in landfills or incineration plants. Each year, EU citizens generate an average of half a tonne of household waste per person. Waste can be an economic loss and it can also negatively impact the environment as well as human health. We invited citizens to share their take on this topic under the 'Waste•SmART' photo competition.

ImaginAIR (2012)
The quality of the air we breathe affects our health and our environment. Even though the impact of poor air quality in Europe is not always visible, air pollution can damage plants, trigger respiratory diseases and result in a shorter life expectancy for humans. We are all affected by air pollution. We invited citizens to share their take on this topic under the 'ImaginAIR' photo competition.
