Health in focus: Moving towards zero pollution means healthier lives in Europe
"The human suffering and economic costs of premature deaths and diseases are a heavy burden for individuals, families, and societies alike. The Covid-19 pandemic has shown how vulnerable we can be when faced with a wide-reaching health crisis. Environmental pollution is an equally widespread health crisis, just with a slower onset.
Later this month, the EEA will publish an assessment looking at cases of cancer and its environmental determinants. Our study shows that a significant share of cancers in Europe are linked to environmental and occupational exposures. This means that these cases of cancer can be prevented if we take stronger action to reduce pollution."

Making transport more sustainable in Europe
"Road transport represents the greatest share of Europe's greenhouse gas emissions, which have also increased by nearly 30% over the past 30 years.
With existing policy measures, transport emissions are projected to decrease, but not sufficiently for the sector to contribute enough to the 2050 climate neutrality target"

European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change
The members of the new European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change were designated in March. The Board elected Ottmar Edenhofer as chairperson on 17 May 2022.
The European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change will serve as a point of reference on scientific knowledge to underpin the European Union’s climate action and efforts to reach climate neutrality by 2050.

Upcoming events
ONE - health, environment, society - Conference - 21-24 June 2022, Belgium and online
The four-day conference, to be held in Brussels and online, will focus on food and feed safety within the broader perspective of sustainable food systems. Updates on the programme will be shared on the event website.
UN Ocean Conference, 27 June - 1 July 2022, Lisbon, Portugal
The Ocean Conference, co-hosted by the Governments of Kenya and Portugal, will seek to propel much needed science-based innovative solutions aimed at starting a new chapter of global ocean action. The EEA will contribute with its work in this area. For more information, please see the conference website.
Beating cancer with better environments - 28 June 2022, Brussels and streamed online
The EEA will present its web report on environmental determinants of cancer. This debate, co-organised with Friends of Europe, will consider what is needed to unlock the potential of disease prevention , the role of cities and their inhabitants, the wider links between health and environment, and the unequal burden of disease across populations.
