External datasets catalogue

Catalogue of all external data references used by EEA products such as indicators, maps, graphs and publications. For "external data" we intend data that is not directly produced and managed by EEA, rather provided by other organisations. Note: Data providers shall retain the primary responsibility for the quality of the data they produce and distribute (Art 7 EEA Data Policy).
External Data Spec European Red List of Dragonflies, IUCN 2010 — 21 Jun 2012
All dragonfly species native to Europe are included, except those confined to northern Caucasus. The geographic scope is continent-wide, extending from Iceland in the west to the Urals in the east, and from Franz Josef Land in the north to the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands in the south. The Caucasian region is not included. Red List assessments were made at two regional levels: for geographical Europe, and for the 27 current Member States of the European Union.

External Data Spec Assessment of observed daily temperature and precipitation extremes — 13 Jun 2012
Current interest in extreme weather events is motivated by the vulnerability of our society to the impacts of such events. The supposed increase in the occurence of extremes and the concern about anthropogenic climate change focuses attention on trends in extremes accompanying ‘global warming’. IPCC (2001) concludes that ‘most of the observed warming over the last 50 years is likely to have been due to the increase in greenhouse gas concentrations’. Yet, knowledge of changes in the occurrence of extremes is still limited.

External Data Spec D source code Melting trends over the Greenland ice sheet (1958–2009) from spaceborne microwave data and regional climate models — 12 Jun 2012
To study near-surface melt changes over the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS) since 1979, melt extent estimates from two regional climate models were compared with those obtained from spaceborne microwave brightness temperatures using two different remote sensing algorithms.
External Data Spec Ice sheets and sea level: thinking outside the box — 12 Jun 2012
Until quite recently, the mass balance (MB) of the great ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica was poorly known and often treated as a residual in the budget of oceanic mass and sea level change. Recent developments in regional climate modelling and remote sensing, especially altimetry, gravimetry and InSAR feature tracking, have enabled us to specifically resolve the ice sheet mass balance components at a near-annual timescale. The results reveal significant mass losses for both ice sheets, caused by the acceleration of marine-terminating glaciers in southeast, west and northwest Greenland and coastal West Antarctica, and increased run-off in Greenland. At the same time, the data show that interannual variability is very significant, masking the underlying trends.
External Data Spec Regionally differentiated contribution of mountain glaciers and ice caps to future sea-level rise — 12 Jun 2012
The contribution to sea-level rise from mountain glaciers and ice caps has grown over the past decades. They are expected to remain an important component of eustatic sea-level rise for at least another century, despite indications of accelerated wastage of the ice sheets.
