Share of the utilised agricultural area (UAA) in the EU-27 used for organic farming over the period 2012-2022

Organic farming is an integrated agricultural production system that aims to minimise or significantly reduce the use of synthetic chemicals in favour of natural substances and climate- and environment-friendly processes. It also adheres to strict standards for animal welfare and prohibits the use of genetically modified organisms. Organic farming provides benefits for biodiversity, environmental and human health, animal welfare and rural development.
European Green Deal initiatives — particularly the EU biodiversity strategy for 2030 and the farm to fork strategy — have set the target that at least 25% of the EU’s UAA should be under organic farming by 2030 (EC, 2020a, 2020b).
Organic farming in the EU has been increasing continuously since 2012. In 2022, it covered an estimated 16.9 million hectares, representing 10.5% of the EU’s UAA. The annual compound growth rate between 2012 and 2022 was 6%; achieving the Green Deal target will require a rate of 10.1% between 2022 and 2030. This would require the conversion of 2.9 million hectares of land per year, and of 23.3 million hectares in total from 2022 to 2030.
