The triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, poses systemic and compounding risks, heightening the likelihood of disruptions and irreversible damages to people, economies, and nature, both in Europe and globally. The complexity and uncertainty of such systemic risks present new challenges for sustainability governance, as established governance models seem to be uncapable of addressing them. What can be done to navigate such challenges? What practices are emerging?

Building on insights from the EEA report on Governance in Complexity, this webinar explores the issue of sustainability governance by focusing on emerging practices of systemic risk assessment and responses. It will benefit from the insights provided by the recently established Accelerator for Systemic Risk Assessment initiative (ASRA), the findings and recommendations of the first European Climate Risk Assessment (EUCRA), and the experience of the Policy Lab of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in strategic foresight, emerging risks, and sustainability governance.

About the event

The event, introduced and facilitated by Catherine Ganzleben and Lorenzo Benini (EEA), will feature two presentations followed by a panel debate.

Firstly, Ruth Richardson (Executive Director of the Accelerator for Systemic Risk Assessment (ASRA), UN Foundation) will present the ASRA network and reflect on emerging practices in systemic risk assessment and responses; secondly, Hans-Martin Fussel (EEA) will reflect on the findings of the EU’s climate risk assessment. In the following session, Laurent Bontoux (Senior foresight expert at the Policy Lab, Joint Research Centre of the European Commission) will join the speakers in a panel debate moderated by the EEA.
