This figure shows the relative importance (%) of the main pathways of introduction of non-indigenous species (NIS) across regional seas of Europe in 2014.
The maps show areas where critical loads for eutrophication of freshwater and terrestrial habitats are exceeded (CSI 005) by nitrogen depositions caused by emissions between 1980 (top left) and 2030 (bottom right)
The maps show the average accumulated exceedance of critical loads for acidification in 1980 (top left), 1990 (top right), 2000 (middle left), 2010 (middle right), 2020 under the revised Gothenburg Protocol scenario emission reduction agreements (bottom left) and 2030 assuming maximum technically feasible reduction (bottom right).
Terrestrial mean species abundance, expressed as percentage of the level that natural vegetation could support.
Connectivity (or isolation) is measured with a network-based habitat availability index that quantifies functional connectivity on the basis of the forest area, its spatial configuration, inter-patch distances, matrix permeability and specific dispersal capabilities of generic groups of forest-dwelling species.
The landscape forest fragmentation in a given region is characterised from three measures: the cover share in ‘core natural’ pattern, in ‘mixed natural’ pattern and in ‘some natural’ pattern. The measures are based on the forest spatial pattern and the composition in terms of agriculture, artificial and natural/semi-natural surfaces in the immediate surroundings (~1km2) of each hectare of forest.
In 2013, 30% of EU citizens have heard of biodiversity but didn’t know what it is.
How to read the graph: In 2007, 80% of EU citizens have never heard of the Natura 2000 network.
